Hurricane Protection: Our philosophy at OCS.

Updated: Aug 17, 2023

As a company with over 15 years of experience in hurricane protection, OCS Garage Doors and Hurricane protection has a philosophy based on one factor: “Can YOU deploy your hurricane system? If you cannot, you have wasted your money.” We are often asked if we can come out and deploy. The answer is No. We must leave the area too. We offer our customers an effective hurricane system that they can deploy on their own. If your Hurricane protection system is on the garage floor because you cannot lift it, your system is useless when you need it the most. Based on that philosophy, OCS offers over 50 different screen design options based

on your individual needs. The most common are: Residential Gromit Screen (RGS), Hemchord screens, Buckle and Strap screens and the easiest to deploy are our power roll-down screens. Each type has specific features that drive our recommendation.

Residential Gromit Screen, or RGS for short, is our basic Armor Screen package. It is lightweight and simple to install with no tools required. This design requires the deployment installer to be comfortable on ladders from 6 ft A frames to 24 ft extension ladders depending on the design of the home. For the people who are not comfortable climbing a ladder we have a second option.

Hemchord, this type of screen has a rigid rubber strip running through the sides of the screen that allows it to slide through a track installed on the sides of your windows. If your home has single or double hung windows a ladder is not required for deployment of this screen because it can be deployed from the inside. Casement or swing out windows and Fixed Glass windows will still require a ladder for deployment butat it is a safer deployment. The ladder rests below the window and the screen can slide up the track thus eliminating the need to get to the top of the window. You’re still on a ladder but in a much safer spot.

The third type is Buckle and Strap screens. As the name implies, these screens are fastened at the top and bottom with buckles and tightened by straps similar to any bookbag. This type of system is designed for big openings like Sliding glass doors, Porches, large storefronts and even the entry and exit doors for many firehouses in Beaufort, Bluffton and Hilton Head. The deployment is systematic, much like installing a shower curtain. A little at a time.

The easiest and the safest deployment method we offer only requires you to push a button. These are powered rolldown screens operated by a remote. They also have a hand crank feature if the power happens to go out unexpectedly. Power rolldown screens have many more features beyond just hurricane protection. When these screens are deployed on an outdoor porch we call that a “Sunday porch”. It is a porch you can use any Sunday no matter what is going on outside. Sunday porch screens can be deployed when the weather turns bad, gets too hot in the summer, cold in the winter or help to dramatically cut down the pollen that paints everything on your porch yellow in the spring. You can also block the sun if needed just by pushing a button. Protect your porch from the elements so you can always enjoy the outdoor space you have invested so much in without worrying about the outdoor conditions, whatever they may be.

At OCS, our screen offerings provide you with hurricane protection as well as comfort based on your wants and needs. Whatever option you choose, you can have peace of mind knowing that you have hurricane protection that you can deploy quickly and safely so you can concentrate on getting out of harm’s way.
